![]() BROOKLYN’S UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: I received a New York Association of Black Journalists award in 2011 for my radio feature below. I won first place for the ‘General Features Long’ category. For this story, I went to Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn Heights, New York for an inside look at one of the registered Underground Railroad sites. | ![]() As part of WBGO’s aural history project, ‘Newark's Jazz Heyday,’ I conducted dozens of interviews to relive Newark’s jazz scene from the '40s to '60s through the memories of people who were there. I talked to everyone, from the local barber to an author who published a book about Newark’s nightlife. After several months of gathering interviews and research, I put together a vivid ten-minute radio feature that goes back in time, when Newark’s jazz scene was the place to be. |
